Take a moment to think about this question: what is the most underused club in your bag? If you’re answering truthfully, our money is on your fairway wood, which could easily become one of your go-to clubs if you carefully consider the different test each hole provides.

Are you guilty of always pulling driver with barely a thought to the hole you’re on, the day’s wind or ground conditions? If some of you considered the challenge more carefully, we’re sure a fairway wood would be a wiser play more often. For example, you can take a hazard completely out of play or leave a full shot to the green instead of an awkward pitch - as illustrated by the graphic here.

2 shot penalty? Not anymore...

Earlier this year the R&A and USGA released a proposed set of changes to the Rules of Golf in an effort to bring them up to date to fit the needs of today’s game. The changes have triggered some talking points, so we’re going to take a closer look at some of the suggested modifications; starting with no penalty for hitting the flag.

Under the current rule (17-3), if a putt from on the green strikes the flag you incur a two-shot penalty and must play the ball as it now lies. In matchplay the penalty is harsher still, with a loss of hole incurred

New 2019 relaxed Rules of Golf

From 2019, relaxed putting green rules mean there will be no penalty if a ball played from the green hits the pin. This means you will be able to hole out with the flag still in while your playing partner rakes a bunker or lines up their putt.
